I went to Kaohsiung this weekend. I didnt need to take the bus this time, so it was more comfy. First, Uncle and his cousin picked me up from school and had dinner at his home. Uncles cousin looked very traditional, but he actually tried to talk to me in English. But his 2 boys were too shy. There was a lot of pork feet to eat, and its great to have home cooking! We then drive to Taichung, and meet my Auntie Paula. I stay the night and we wake up early the next day to head to Kaohsiung. We are going there because, Uncles grandmother recently moved there from there hometown island Ponghu. First we meet Aunties cousin, and see her big house in Kaohsiung. We had dim sum, and drove around Love river. We baught some traditional taiwanese "joong" like things. One kind was like raddish cake. Then we left them and went to Grandmothers home. I meet Uncles elder sister and his grandmother. She is very cute, but I could not communicate with her because they speak Taiwanese, and I hardly have a grasp of Mandarin. Grandmother told Uncles she likes me very much, and wishes that I would be her great-grandsons "good" friend (meaning wife?) Why do I attract elders, but not Hot guys? =P This reminds me of when I was in HK, and an auntie kept telling my Grandmother I look pretty and she wants to introduce me to her brothers son...
Then my distant cousin Donovan arrives home from the army (he is a helicopter captain). It is so funny because Uncle was trying to set us up to talk more to each other. So Uncle made him speak in English to me during dinner, but his hands were shaking because he was nervous. Totally did not expect that from an army guy. We have special fish and yummy seafood for dinner and then visit Donovans room. There we see pictures of him and his girlfriend, who is also in the army. Phew~... Uncles reaction was like, "What? You have a girlfriend?"
We go sing some karaoke at their house, and they are really good. I can only sing some Jay Chou songs. I have a nice conversation with Auntie during bedtime and sleep very late. Later I found out that there was an earthquake close to Taipei at 3am. Weird how I was awake but didnt feel anything. The people back at NCCU told me it was very scary, but it wasnt a very big quake. One Korean girl told me they were on the 9th floor of a karaoke that night and didnt feel it. They had previously been laughing at the emergency video the karaoke place showed to tell people what to do during an earthquake. So, I missed the first earthquake in Taiwan...
The next day, we play some games after lunch to see who should finish the food. I lost when we played paper/scissor/rock. But then I suggested the counting game with 7's and multiples of 7. It was hilarious because Uncle kept losing at the same mistake and never noticed. Auntie also couldnt keep track of the multiples. It was difficult to get to 100, but finally I think we did. We finished like 3 bowls of fruit.
We then went up to the tallest building in Kaohsiung for tea. We played sherades, and acted out all these words. I kept choosing hard words like: disco, twins, shuai ge. And Uncles definition of difficult was like: Mc Donalds... =P So I guess my words were relatively more difficult... hehe... After tea, we drove around the city and had food at the same restaurant that the other auntie baught for us the day before. But we kept quiet because we felt bad =P. Then Donovan drove like a mad man up these roads up the mountain and down again like a roller coaster, to the same area the other auntie took us the day before. I guess people in Kaohsiung only know these few places to go to in the city. We drive by Love river as well. Donovan drives an Audi and it looks so nice! He also has this sensor that tells him if cops are near and GPS mapping gadget to help him find his way. After all this crazy driving, we get our stuff and head back to Taichung. I had to sit in Uncles car for the first 2 hours, then switched to Donovans. It was a crazy ride because Uncle had to try and follow Donovans crazy fast driving, winding in and out of traffic. The ride in Donovans car was a bit better because he slowed down a bit. It was a nice ride back to campus. I was freaked out when I got back because all the gates were locked. I never knew there was a small entranceway in the middle of a wall, but I do now. Phew~, I thought I had to sleep out in the cold.
